  Impound & Adoption
Barrington Oaks' Elk River location serves as the impound facility for Elk River, Minnesota.
Animals that are found and picked up by the local authorities are delivered to the Elk River location by the authorities.  All animals are scanned for microchip identification upon admission to the hospital.  If the animal is identified with an owner by means of microchip, identification or rabies tags, the owner is contacted.   Otherwise, they are held for a period of 7 days.  An ad for the found pet is placed in the local shoppers.  During that time, an owner may come forward to claim their pet, with fees* payable to both the police department and to the impound facility of Barrington Oaks Veterinary Hospital.

If you find an animal at large, please contact your local authorities.   Please do not bring the animal to us.  We do not accept animals directly; it must be admitted through the local authorities.  All telephone calls regarding stray animals will be referred to the local authorities.  Thank you for your consideration.

Fees payable to the city of Elk River are as follows:

First incident:  $30.00

Second incident:  $50.00

Third incident:  $100.00

*please inquire for applicable fees, thank you.

*These fees are payable to the city of Elk River upon release of pet to the owner/handler and are listed as per incidence, per pet, per year.  A separate handling fee is payable to Barrington Oaks Veterinary hospital upon release of pet to the owner/handler.

If an animal is not claimed by the owner during the allotted period of time, the animal is then assessed for the purpose of adoption.

All animals are scanned for microchip identification upon admission to the hospital.   All animals are treated for fleas.  All dogs are given the Bordetella vaccination to protect against kennel cough.  Cats are feline leukemia tested and checked for ear mites.  Prior to adoption,  appropriate vaccinations are given, including distemper and rabies.  Feces is tested and de-worming medication is administered.

Cats and kittens are frequently adopted out from Barrington Oaks Veterinary Hospital in Elk River.  There is a set adoption fee to cover some of the costs involved in preparing the animal for adoption.  This also includes a discount on the spay or neuter surgery, if the animal is not already altered.  Dogs are also adopted out from the Elk River location, with canine rescue groups and local humane societies utilized as resources in the event that the dog is not adopted in a reasonable amount of time.   Although Barrington Oaks is a full-service veterinary hospital and space is limited, our goal is to find suitable homes for these animals as the desirable alternative to euthanasia.

We invite you to stop by our Elk River location to see the pets that are currently available for adoption!
