Find Your Lost Pet
We hope that you never need to use this page but, as we know, pets can and do get lost.

If your pet gets lost, act quickly!  Minnesota law requires animals to be held only 5 days, (after which they may be euthanized or sold to a research facility).

  1. Barrington Oaks Veterinary Hospital is the impound facility for Elk River, Minnesota.

  2. Contact police in your local areas and surrounding communities to file a lost report and to determine the  impound facility.  Elk River Police Department  Princeton Police Department  (for list of police, see below)

  3. Visit animal control facilities in person.  It is easy to make mistakes identifying a pet over the phone.

  4. Post flyers and photos in the area where the animal was last seen.

  5. Run ads in the local newspapers.  Elk River Star News and Shopper

  6. Check with local humane societies, impound facilities, rescue groups and veterinarians.

  7. Continue to check; pets may run for days and cover a very long distance.

When it comes to lost pets, prevention is the best.  Keep your pets confined to your yard or on a leash at all times.  Transport your pets using a leash or a kennel carrier.  Keep identification tags on your pets.  Get your pets a microchip; both dogs and cats!  Most lost pets have no permanent ID on them, and most recovered animals are without identification entirely.  Collars and tags can be removed or fall off.  A microchip provides permanent identification for the animal.   The listed impound facilities scan all animals for microchips.  Make sure to get it done now, before it is too late.

Vaccinate, Spay/Neuter, Microchip!
